Scope

This specification covers general laminate properties, mechanical properties, physical properties, and applicable documents for Fiber-Brite® Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics (FRP) traffic control sign panels. These panels shall be available in .050, .060*, .090, .100, .140, .200 and .250. Panel thicknesses of .090 and thicker are available in white, yellow, green, red, blue, black and brown.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

THICKNESS
Panels shall be 0.050 .090 and .140 inches thick with a tolerance of +/-.010 inches.

GLASS CONTENT
The panel shall have a minimum 21% glass content. The sign panel glass shall be read using a 60 Glossmeter and have the following values:
Service Side – 53% Reflective
Backside – 65% Reflective

SIZE
(length and width) Panel tolerance on nominal length and width specified by the purchaser shall be +/- 1/8 inch for dimensions of 12 feet or less when measured in accordance with ASTM D3841-80.

SQUARENESS
Panels shall be manufactured with smooth surfaces on both the top and bottom of the panel within 1/8 inch of squareness per 12 feet of length when measured in accordance with ASTM D3841-80.

COLOR & GLOSS
Panel shall be pigmented to a visually uniform color. Color shall be visually uniform with the pigments compounded into the resins before cure to make the color an integral part of the laminate. The white sign panel color must meet the following Trishimulus Values asmeasured on tne FMC-2 color scale on a MacBeth 1500

COEFFICIENT OF LINEAR THERMAL EXPANSION
Panels shall have a minimum coefficient of linear thermal expansion of 1.8 x 10-5  inch/inch/°F when tested in accordance with ASTM D696-79.

WEATHER RESISTANCE
Panels shall be classified minimally as Grade ll (weather resistant) panel as specified in ASTM D3841-80 following a 3,000 + 100 hour weatherometer test.

FLATNESS
Panels shall have a maximum deflection of 0.5 inches when tested in accordance with TSP-1 (Appendix ll).

IMPACT RESISTANCE
Panels shall resist the impact of a 1.18lb. falling ball, dropped from 60 feet in accordance with ASTM D3841-80.

THERMAL STABILITY
Panel strength and impact resistance shall not be appreciably affected over a temperature range of -65°F to 212°F.

GENERAL LAMINATE PROPERTIES

Fiber-Brite® traffic control sign paneI shall have the same smooth surfaces on both sides with a minimum of .004 protective layer of gel coating. The panel shall be randomly oriented, chopped fiberglass reinforced, thermoset, pigmented polyester laminate. The panel shall be acrylic modified and UV stabilized for outdoor weatherability. lt shall contain additives to retard flame propagation but shall contain no other fillers.

The panel must not have any visible fiberglass prominence. The panel must be stabilized throughout with the glass and a non-shrink resin, which retards moisture absorption to less than .001 per square inch. The Fiber-Brite® panel shall be stabilized to prevent release of migrating constituents over time (i.e. solvents, monomers.etc.) and shall contain no residual release agents on the surface of the laminate that will interfere any subsequent bonding operations.

The Fiber-Brite® panel shall not contain visible cracks, pinholes, foreign inclusions, or surface wrinkles that would affect implied performance, alter the specific dimensions of the panel, or otherwise affect its serviceability.

Mechanical Properties
All mechanical properties are stated as typical averages and may vary +/- 10% on any individual test average. The averages represent properties measured both in the line direction of the panel and at 90 degrees to that line. The mechanical properties are tested in accordance with the appropriate ASTM tests referenced.
